Rather than focusing on international competition and the comparative educational ranking of the United States, this volume provides information on how young adolescents are taught and how middle grades are organized in countries around the world. In addition, the educational successes and failures evident in the education of 10- to 15-year-olds, the indictments and praises that have been offered by supporters and critics alike, and the research that has been generated in these countries about educating young adolescents is addressed. 520 8 In order to facilitate a comparative analysis across these countries, each of the 14 chapters addresses a common set of guiding questions. An International Look at Educating Young Adolescents offers, for the first time, material that will permit more fruitful discussions about the status of the middle school movement worldwide."--Jacket. 520 (Sponsored by the Middle Level Education Research Special Interest Group and the National Middle School Association) Studies like the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) have compared the performance of U.S. middle grade students (i.e., eighth graders) to those in other countries. In relation to middle grade schools, 20 countries outperformed the United States in mathematics and nine countries scored above the U.S. in science. The intent of this volume of The Handbook of Research in Middle Level Education, An International Look at Educating Young Adolescents, is to broaden our understanding of middle grade schooling by critically examining the education of young adolescents (ages 10-15, typically grades 6-8) through an international lens. In addition to looking at how schooling and students are organized for teaching and learning, this handbook will focus on the successes and failures that are evident in a wide variety of nations, present the indictments and praises that have been offered by supporters and critics alike, and review the research that has been generated about educating young adolescents in an effort to cross national boundaries. Ultimately, this volume of the handbook series will explore what international perspectives teach us about the effective education of young adolescents. 650 0 Middle school education|0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh98000535|vCross-cultural studies.|0http:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001526 700 1 Mertens, Steven B.|0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2005076327 700 1 Anfara, Vincent A.|0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2001084526 700 1 Roney, Kathleen.|0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2006095228 776 08 |iPrint version:|tInternational look at educating young adolescents.|dCharlotte, N.C. : Information Age Pub. ; Westerville, Ohio : National Middle School Association (NMSA) ; [Washington, DC] : Middle Level Education Research Special Interest Group (MLER), 2009 |z9781607520412|z1607520419|w(DLC) 2008054469 |w(OCoLC)297222651 830 0 Handbook of research in middle level education series. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2002107603 956 40 |uhttp://proxy.opal-libraries.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=469713|zView online 990 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America|c2020-01-17|yMaster record variable field(s) change: 505|5OHN 990 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America|c2018-03-23|yMaster record variable field(s) change: 776|5OHN 990 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America|c2016-12-16|yMaster record variable field(s) change: 650 990 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America|c2016-12-09|yMaster record variable field(s) change: 650, 776 990 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America|c2016-07-29|yMaster record variable field(s) change: 245
