Dusk. 520 A major contribution to the cultural and literary history of the Victorian age, Rule of Darkness maps the complex relationship between Victorian literary forms, genres, and theories and imperialist, racist ideology. Critics and cultural historians have usually regarded the Empire as being of marginal importance to early and mid-Victorian writers. Patrick Brantlinger asserts that the Empire was central to British culture as a source of ideological and artistic energy, both supported by and lending support to widespread belief in racial superiority, the need to transform "savagery" into "civilization," and the urgency of promoting emigration.Rule of Darkness brings together material from public records, memoirs, popular culture, and canonical literature. Brantlinger explores the influence of the novels of Captain Frederick Marryat, pioneer of British adolescent adventure fiction, and shows the importance of William Makepeace Thackeray's experience of India to his novels. He treats a number of Victorian best sellers previously ignored by literary historians, including the Anglo-Indian writer Philip Meadows Taylor's Confessions of a Thug and Seeta. Brantlinger situates explorers' narratives and travelogues by such famous author-adventurers as David Livingstone and Sir Richard Burton in relation to other forms of Victorian and Edwardian prose. Through readings of works by Arthur Conan Doyle, Joseph Conrad, H. Rider Haggard, Rudyard Kipling, John Hobson, and many others, he considers representations of Africa, India, and other non-British parts of the world in both fiction and nonfiction. The most comprehensive study yet of literature and imperialism in the early and mid-Victorian years, Rule of Darkness offers, in addition, a revisionary interpretation of imperialism as a significant factor in later British cultural history, from the 1880s to World War I. It is essential reading for anyone concerned with Victorian culture and society and, more generally, with the relationship between Victorian writers and imperialism, 'and between racist ideology and patterns of domination in modern history. 546 English. 588 Description based on print version record. 648 7 1800-1999|2fast 650 0 English literature|y19th century|xHistory and criticism. 650 0 Imperialism in literature. 650 0 English literature|y20th century|xHistory and criticism. 650 0 Politics and literature|zGreat Britain. 650 0 Colonies in literature. 650 7 LITERARY CRITICISM|xEuropean|xEnglish, Irish, Scottish, Welsh.|2bisacsh 650 7 Colonies in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00868477 650 7 English literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00911989 650 7 Imperialism in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00968142 650 7 Politics and literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01069960 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204623 776 08 |iPrint version:|tRule of darkness|dIthaca : Cornell University Press, 1988.|z0801420903 (alk. paper)|w(DLC) 87047823 956 40 |uhttp://proxy.opal-libraries.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=671370|zView online 990 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Evidence Based Acquisitions|c2020-12 -15|yNew collection jstor.ebookseba|5OXB 990 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America|c2020-11-20|yMaster record 040 $e RDA change - Master record encoding level change|5OHN 990 ProQuest Ebook Central|bEbook Central Academic Complete |c2020-11-20|yMaster record 040 $e RDA change - Master record encoding level change|5MTU 990 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Evidence Based Acquisitions|c2020-11 -20|yMaster record 040 $e RDA change - Master record encoding level change|5JCU 990 ProQuest Ebook Central|bEbook Central Academic Complete |c2020-11-20|yMaster record 040 $e RDA change - Master record encoding level change|5OXB 990 ProQuest Ebook Central|bEbook Central Academic Complete |c2020-11-20|yMaster record 040 $e RDA change - Master record encoding level change|5MAL 990 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America|c2020-05-01|yAdded to collection netlibrary.academicna|5OHN 990 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America|c2020-03-20|yRemoved from collection netlibrary.academicna|5OHN 990 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Evidence Based Acquisitions|c2020-01 -24|ySubsequent record output|5JCU 990 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Evidence Based Acquisitions|c2020-01 -23|yNew collection jstor.ebookseba|5JCU 990 ProQuest Ebook Central|bEbook Central Academic Complete |c2018-03-09|yAdded to collection pqebk.acadcomplete - Removed from collection pqebk.acadcomplete|5OXB 990 ProQuest Ebook Central|bEbook Central Academic Complete |c2018-03-09|yAdded to collection pqebk.acadcomplete - Removed from collection pqebk.acadcomplete|5MAL 990 ProQuest Ebook Central|bEbook Central Academic Complete |c2018-03-09|yAdded to collection pqebk.acadcomplete - Removed from collection pqebk.acadcomplete|5MTU 990 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America|c2017-09-22|yMaster record variable field(s) change: 650|5OHN 990 ProQuest Ebook Central|bEbook Central Academic Complete |c2017-09-22|yMaster record variable field(s) change: 650 |5OXB 990 ProQuest Ebook Central|bEbook Central Academic Complete |c2017-09-22|yMaster record variable field(s) change: 650 |5MTU 990 ProQuest Ebook Central|bEbook Central Academic Complete |c2017-09-22|yMaster record variable field(s) change: 650 |5MAL 990 ProQuest ebrary|bebrary Academic Complete|c2017-08-11 |yRemoved from collection ebrary.ebooks|5MTU 990 ProQuest Ebook Central|bEbook Central Academic Complete |c2017-08-11|yCustom text change|5MTU 990 ProQuest Ebook Central|bEbook Central Academic Complete |c2017-07-28|yAdded to collection pqebk.acadcomplete - Removed from collection pqebk.acadcomplete|5MAL 990 ProQuest Ebook Central|bEbook Central Academic Complete |c2017-06-16|5OXB 990 ProQuest Ebook Central|bEbook Central Academic Complete |c2017-07-21|yAdded to collection pqebk.acadcomplete|5MAL 990 ProQuest Ebook Central|bEbook Central Academic Complete |c2017-08-05|yAdded to collection pqebk.acadcomplete|5MTU 990 ProQuest ebrary|bebrary Academic Complete|c2017-04-20|5MTU 990 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America|c2016-09-16|yMaster record variable field(s) change: 245
