This book is an audio-visual ethogram that lists, describes, and defines, with video clips, all the known behavioral patterns of wild chimpanzees. ... Listing the behavioral patterns of a local population of chimpanzees in principle includes: (1) behavioral patterns of the LCA [least common ancestor] of Pan and Homo; (2) patterns common to the genus Pan, namely chimpanzees and bonobos, but not to Homo; (3) patterns common to the chimpanzee Pan troglodytes, but not to the bonobo Pan paniscus; (4) patterns common to eastern (P. t. schweinfurthii) and central (P. t. troglodytes), but not western (P. t. verus) and Nigerian (P. t. vellerosus) chimpanzees ... ; (5) patterns unique to the eastern chimpanzees, P. t. schweinfurthii; (6) patterns unique to the Mahale population; (7) customary patterns unique to many individuals (at least to most members of an age or sex class) of M group chimpanzees; (8) habitual patterns limited to a few individuals of M group; (9) rare patterns observed only in a single individual (idiosyncracy). -- from the introduction. |
