Summary This volume is the biography of H.L.A. Hart, the pre-eminent legal philosopher of the 20th century. As a scholar he re-invented the philosophy of law and revolutionised our understanding of law as a social institution. His writings had an enormous impact on informed public opinion in the 1960s.
